August Travel Deals
August 2nd, 2011
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, the month of August usually means one thing – that there’s only a month left of summer. That’s only a month left to cram in as many getaways as humanly possible before school and work schedules conspire to keep you indoors.
Of course, throughout much of the world, August is a semi-official month-long holiday. Throughout Europe there are “on vacation” signs up in cities big and small all month long as people escape the heat of the city for more temperate places like beaches or mountains.
In other words, why not take your cue from so many others and take advantage of the last few weeks of summer for a vacation of your own?
If you’ve got your sights set on an August trip but you don’t have unlimited resources, it’s important to do your research in advance so you don’t pay too much for your trip. Yes, you can find August travel deals, you just need to know where to look.
Europe in August
As mentioned above, much of Europe goes on vacation in August – it’s the month when many people get their government-mandated holiday time, and as a result the best vacation spots in Europe tend to be crowded and expensive in August. But since many Europeans get out of the hot cities as quickly as they can, making the beaches and mountain towns the places to be, it can sometimes be easier to find good deals in August on hotels in the big tourist centers than you might expect. It’s always tough to find cheap hotels in Dublin (it’s an expensive city to visit), but August prices are likely to be lower than July or even September. Same goes for cities like Paris and Rome, too.
August isn’t crammed with major holidays the way some months are, but there are a few big festivals for which people often travel – so if you’ve got any of them on your calendar that’s another reason you’d need to plan your trip well in advance. There’s the Lollapalooza Festival for music lovers, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for theatre and performance lovers, and then there’s Burning Man for lovers of… Well, let’s just say those with a love of the off-kilter will find themselves right at home in the Nevada desert every August.
Perhaps you’re just interested in getting away for some part of August, but you’re not as particular about where. If that’s the case, then you’d do well to review the places that are off-season in summer to find out where your travel budget will go further and where the crowds will be smaller. Places like East Africa and parts of Australia and South America can be great bargain destinations in August, and depending on where you go the weather is still mild. Don’t overlook the thrill of a last minute vacation deal, either – they can offer extremely low prices, even if you don’t have your pick of destinations.
