honeymoon4You don’t have to be a hardcore traveler to be looking forward to your honeymoon. In fact, if you’re not a frequent traveler then your honeymoon is probably going to be even more special to you. And although you may be planning to splurge on your trip, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to spend a fortune on your honeymoon. If you plan it right and figure out where you can save money, after all, then you’ll have more to spend on fancy romantic dinners or spa treatments while you’re on your trip.

In this article we’ll explore some of the best ways to save money on your honeymoon so that you don’t miss out on any of the romantic luxury – but you don’t pay through the nose for it.

Off-Season Travel

This is one of the easiest ways to save money on a trip. Nearly every destination has an “off-season,” which prices go down and crowds thin out. Even places that are popular year-round have times of the year when they’re less expensive than others – and for honeymooners on a budget that’s the time of year you’ll want to travel. This may mean postponing your honeymoon trip until a few months after your actual wedding, but you could save quite a bit by doing so.

Honeymoon Registry

More and more couples are forgoing the traditional wedding registry and opting for (at least in part) a honeymoon registry instead. This is especially true when couples live together before they marry, and have already accumulated things like toasters and towels. With a honeymoon registry, your friends and family can spring for things like a dinner out at a restaurant in your honeymoon destination, a couples massage, or even a portion of your hotel stay. And if you’ve got frequent flying family members who want to help out, this is a great way for them to contribute frequent flyer miles to your honeymoon trip.

Cruises

Some cruise vacations are expensive, but not all of them. And if you’re the kind of person who has trouble thinking about how much you might spend on a honeymoon trip, then a cruise might be your best option. Assuming you find an inexpensive cruise that’s going to destinations you want to visit, paying for nearly everything up front will help you relax about money while on your trip. There are some things that aren’t going to be included in a cruise – usually things like alcohol and shore excursions – but the big ticket items (your room and meals) are already taken care of, so the amount you’re forking out during your trip is relatively minimal and easier to track.

Vacation Packages & All-Inclusive Resorts

Package trips have a similar benefit as cruises do, in that you get to buy a few of the bigger expenditures on a vacation in one fell swoop, but packages vary considerably so you’ll need to look at them carefully before you buy. As un-romantic as it sounds, you’ll need to do some math to compare buying a vacation package or a trip to an all-inclusive resort to what it would cost to buy the things you absolutely have to have separately. In many cases, booking the package is going to save you money – but not always.
