January Travel Deals

For many people, December is a time to travel because you have to – not necessarily because you want to. We love the December holidays as much as the next person, and we certainly love hanging out with family (even if it means pre-dawn wake-up calls from the kids eager to open gifts), but traveling at Christmas is usually a headache and a half – not to mention expensive.

So, let’s assume you’ve survived Christmas travel (and, if you’re in the U.S., this likely follows Thanksgiving travel) and you need a real vacation to recover from your Christmas vacation. It’s time to reward yourself with a trip that’s all about what you want to do and where you want to go. And not only that, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, it might be time to escape the cold for a little bit and remind your body what sun feels like.

Which means it’s the perfect time to start hunting for January travel deals!

Depending on where you’d like to go in January, you might find cheap travel deals without much digging – or you might need to work a little harder to find the deals. While January might be considered the “low season” – which is typically the cheapest time to travel – in many parts of the world, there are some dates in January that are still really expensive and some destinations for which it’s more of the “high season.”

If you’re planning to travel somewhere fun for New Year’s, then you’ll pay more for your trip. And if you’re planning a ski weekend somewhere popular, then you’ll pay more for your trip. In both of those cases, in order to avoid paying full price for airfare and hotel rooms, do yourself a favor and start doing your trip research many months in advance. You’ll be more aware of great deals when they come along, and you’ll be able to book a trip early enough to take advantage of special promotions that often come up.

For many other January travel plans, you can score some incredible deals. Visiting any destination that’s in the middle of winter (and not a ski resort) will mean much lower prices, and even some warmer places go on sale in January to lure people out of hibernation for a brief sunny break. If you play your cards right, you can find excellent January travel deals that will help you recuperate from your Christmas travels without spending a fortune.
