Arizona Spring Training Baseball Vacation Packages

spring-training.jpgThere is no surer sign that spring is on the way than hearing the crack of the bat, the cheers from the crowd and the sight of saliva being expunged from players’ mouths. Baseball is the great American pastime. If you are a baseball purist, or simply someone who appreciates sitting out in the sun eating junk food and drinking overpriced watered down beer, going to spring training will be something you’ll cherish forever.

There are two leagues when it comes to spring training baseball. There is the Grapefruit League in Florida and the Cactus League in Arizona. Both offer ample opportunities to get an up close and personal look at some of the best athletes in the world, while also allowing you to reintroduce yourself to the sun after a long winter of hibernation.

Alaska Airlines has a nice vacation package deal to watch the Seattle Mariners play in Peoria, Arizona. Don’t worry, even if you aren’t a Mariners fan you can take advantage of this offer and go watch another team in the Cactus League or simply go to Arizona and play a few rounds of golf.

For those who prefer the action in the Grapefruit League, you can do a quick search for cheap plane tickets to Florida.

Los Angeles to London Flights for under $350

brolly.jpgLeave it to an airline from New Zealand to come through with the best deal on flights from Los Angeles to London to hit the World Wide Web in a long, long time. Air New Zealand is offering up the goodies for $348 round-trip plus taxes and all that other jazz that will probably make it closer to $400, which is still a very, very reasonable prize for a flight from the west coast of the U.S. to London.

The only hitch is that you have to travel before May 31, 2007, which isn’t really a hitch at all because now is the off-season for London tourists. Sure you’ll likely have to deal with a bit of rain and you’ll have to pack an extra layer or three of clothing for the trip, but the payoff will come when you go to tour the Tate Museum and you and a few slacker member of the royal family are the only ones there.

What else is there to do in London this time of year besides shivering in the dampness? The London Travel guide offers up all sorts of suggestions, while also keeping you abreast of the current happenings in one of the greatest cities on this or any other planet.

Air Deals to Veni, Vidi, Venice!

veni.jpgTrivia buffs and fans of history will know that it was Julius Caesar who coined the phrase “Veni, Vidi, Vici”, “I came, I saw, I conquered” before he invented the Caesar salad. This expression is often apropos of travel bargain hunting on the Internet. Sometimes you come across a deal that makes you feel like the self-created travel agent hero that deep down inside you truly know that you are. And sometimes you need a little help slaying the cost giants. We’re here to help.

Today’s offering is a round-trip flight from New York to Venice, Italy for the great price of $513. Venice is affectionately known by those who love her as the “Queen of the Adriatic” and the “City of Water”. It is not so affectionately known by those who have seen her during the peak summer months as the “City of Innumerable Tourists all of which are wearing Day-Glo and wearing a Belly Pouch”.

We kid, because we love.

Venice is awesome and its awesomeness is even more evident if you travel there during the non-peak summer season when you can practically have the canals all to yourself. The current deal fills that bill and it will enable you to come, see and conquer one of Italy’s jewels.

Crazy Good Deals on Flights to Mexico, Germany and Puerto Rico

happy-pills.jpgSomeone must have slipped some happy pills in the coffee of the United Airlines executives because they are doing their best to make the world a happier, more smiley place. The airline has some seriously good deals on international flights with some especially tasty prices on flights to Mexico, Germany and Puerto Rico.

How tasty? Try finding a cheaper flight than the one from Indianapolis to Cancun, Mexico for $196 round-trip. That is crazy talk. Makes me almost want to move to Indy.

The Mexican good times can also be found in Chicago where flights to Mexico City are being offered for less than $300 and in Sacramento where you can fly to Los Cabos for $202 round-trip.

The party continues with all kinds of good prices on flights to Germany. There is New York to Munich for $328, Philly to Berlin for $319 and Pittsburg to Frankfurt for the incredible rate of $301. Sprechen Sie Savings?

For my friends keeping it real in the 503 area code, you need to get yourself over to Priceline and snag one of these flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico from Portland for $296. You know that offers like these won’t last so get yourself into gear and purchase your flights before January 9, 2007 or before those happy pills wear off.

Aloha means Hello, Good-Bye and Great Fares to Hawaii

triathlon_swim270.jpgThe New Year brings new hope and all those new resolutions that you’ll probably break after about a week. If one of your resolutions is to get into better shape, perhaps you could set your sights high and start training for the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. Doesn’t a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike and topped off by a 26.2 mile run sound like an ideal way to spend a day?

Personally, I get exhausted just watching those athletes killing themselves on television, but now it is possible to see them up close and personal for not so much money. Aloha Airlines has some tasty spring fares that make the enchanted islands of Hawaii that much more enchanted. You can fly from Oakland to Kailua-Kona, home of the Ironman Triathlon, for less than $400 round-trip. Even for a destination that has frequent airline deals, this is a pretty good one.

Moreover, Aloha Airlines also has discounted flights between the Hawaiian Islands, making it possible for you to cover even more ground than one of those triathletes. Whether it is for sport, relaxation or simply to escape the fact that you failed miserably with your get in shape resolution, Hawaii is one place you should be resolved to visit this year.

All the best to each and everyone of you in 2007.

Say Aloha to Great Fares to Hawaii!

A Winter Holiday in Cairo, Egypt

cairo.JPGCairo, Egypt has been described as many things, but no one has ever called it dull. The intellectual heart of the Middle East and one of the historic cradles of civilization, Cairo is a sprawling city of chaos and calm. It is part Africa, part Arabia, part modern and part antiquity and 100-percent worth a visit. If you want to be fascinated on your next holiday, look no further than Egypt.

Alitalia has one heck of a deal on flights to Cairo. You can fly round trip from New York, Boston or Chicago to Egypt’s capital for less than $500 if you book your ticket by December 27, 2006 and fly between January 15 and February 28th, 2007. This airfare is at least a couple hundred dollars cheaper than what you’ll usually find for flights to Cairo so it behooves you to consider traveling to Egypt this winter.

While you are at it, you could make it a truly memorable adventure by taking part in a nine-day tour from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. If you combine the mayhem of Cairo with the calm of a Red Sea resort and the history of a place like Petra, you might just have found the perfect trip.

Spirit Airlines Presents A Very Mullet Christmas

mullet-1.jpgIt was the night before Christmas and all through the barber shop not a creature was stirring not even a mullet. Ah yes, the childhood memories that come to mind when one thinks of Christmas and mullets. There is of course that classic tale of the Grinch who Stole Christmas, which takes place in the town of Mulletville. There is also that unforgettable movie, It’s a Wonderful Mullet. And who could ever forget that the most famous reindeer of them all was shunned by his peers not because of his shiny red nose but because he was all business in the front and all party in the back? The mullet and Christmas go together like bread and butter.

Spirit Airlines captures the essence of the mullet and its place in the holiday season with its Very Mullet Christmas promotion. The airline is offering wildly discounted flights to places like Orlando and Puerto Rico. Presumably these are destinations where the mullet is revered and respected because I can think of no other reason why the airline would have such a promotion.

Get thee to a barber shop and get your mullet on today. The offer ends December 15, 2006 and the only thing worse than missing out on a good deal is missing out on a good deal while your sister wife combs your mullet.

New Year’s in Rome, That Wouldn’t Suck

fireworks1.jpgSome people are really into the New Year’s holiday. I am not one of those people. I find that there is always a lot of pressure to have the time of your life and usually you are lucky to just have a good time. People who normally don’t drink very much end up drinking too much. People who normally do drink too much feel compelled to drink even more. The service at restaurants usually stinks because the wait staff would rather be partying elsewhere instead of serving a bunch of drunk people. Frankly, I have had the most fun staying at home and watching Dick Clark. Yes, I am officially an old fart.

Even though it isn’t my favorite holiday I understand why people dig it. The New Year brings new opportunities and the chance to remake yourself into the person you want to be. That is all well and good and if you feel compelled to party in the process than go for it.

Celebrating the New Year in another country is certainly one way to build lasting memories. It also affords the opportunity to see how other cultures get wasted and how the wait staff in other places don’t want to be working. Don’t let my negativity get you down. You can have fun on New Year’s and that fun can take place in a cool destination like Rome. Book your ticket by December 19, 2006 and you can usher in the New Year in Italy for less than $400 round trip from New York.

I’d like to wish a happy and joyous 2007 to one and all. Thanks for reading the blog.

Save on Flights to Lake Tahoe

lake-tahoe.jpgWhen you are swooshing down the mountain at speeds of 40 mph, cutting a nasty path through the fresh powder and feeling the glorious sun beat down on your face, take a moment to look around and thank your lucky stars that a place like Lake Tahoe exists. The mountains, the blue lake that looks almost unreal, the copious amounts of snow, and the days of bright sunshine; these are all reason enough to get down on your knees at night and to offer up thanks to the ski gods.

Tahoe is a great destination just about any time of year, but it is during the winter months when a special place becomes even more special. Of course, it isn’t perfect. There can be significant crowds on the weekends and standing in lines with grumpy, impatient urbanites can be a real buzzkill, but all in all you probably won’t complain if you book yourself on one of the cheapie flights from Southwest Airlines and you head to Lake Tahoe for some winter fun.

The flights actually fly into nearby Reno, which offers up its own joys if you are into gambling, copious amounts of smoking, prostitution and all-u-can eat buffets. Combine Reno with the natural joys of Tahoe and you can experience the best of both worlds in one easy trip.
