Cheap Flights to Houston
The oil and gas capital of the United States, the fourth largest city in population and second largest in area, with the first dome stadium, the largest concentration of medical institutions in the world, and of course the foremost space center—Houston exemplifies the Texas ideals of being the biggest and the best.
Houston is also very attractive, livable, and fun. There are many parks and smaller green spaces and many unusual public sculptures and fountains. Architecture is often in-your-face, and there’s no end to the odd juxtaposition of elegant and mundane, functional and whimsical. Buildings show a decided degree of originality: the name of Texas Children’s Hospital is spelled out on its sloping lawn in brightly colored letters like giant kids’ blocks; a Mayan pyramid tops a skyscraper, a parking garage has a waterfall flowing over one wall.
NASA, the rodeo, museums, the Astrodome, elegant restaurants and barbecue spots—Houston has plenty to offer. And Houstonians are among the world’s friendliest people. Never hesitate to ask for directions or information; this town, for all its sophistication, still shows the spirit of the frontier days when the pioneers all pitched in to lend a helping hand.
Cheap Flights to Hawaii
Why Go: The Hawaiian islands really are as good as they look in the movies. Selecting which island to go to depends on whether you want to fish, snorkel and scuba dive, hike, surf, beachcomb, climb cliffs, take in some history, party—the list goes on and on. One thing you can be assured of is that no matter which island you visit, the scenery is breathtaking: rain forests, sandy beaches that range in color from white to green, volcanoes, lava beds, rain forests, verdant valleys, canyons, and cliffs.
Temperatures in Hawaii remain constant throughout the year, but because of the islands’ isolation and range of environments, there is a vast assortment of flora and fauna. And don’t forget that some islands also have cultural and historic sites, museums, and ethnic areas like Honolulu’s Chinatown. It’s hard to see all an island has to offer in just one trip. As more and more tourists visit Hawai’i, the islands are becoming more resort like, but you can still experience their beauty and essence.
Cheap Flights to Ft. Myers, Florida
Glorious sun, beautiful beaches, golf courses galore, and manatees—just a starter list for enjoying yourself in Fort Myers, the City of Palms.
Sanibel and Captiva are two islands off the coast of Fort Myers, connected to the mainland by a three-mile toll road (you’ll need a car). Sanibel has smooth beaches on its Gulf side and shallow bays, creeks, and the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on the east side. The refuge covers 6,000 acres and is home to many animal species. It is famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations. Sanibel also has fine fishing.
The Captiva Island beaches at Fort Myers have been called the most romantic in the country. Captiva Island has only the sandy beaches, shells, calm waters, and warm air. It’s the perfect place to do nothing, although sunning, walking, and fishing are also possibilities.
For something more laid back and with more moderate prices, try Fort Myers Beach. A seven-mile, white, sandy beach, it is considered one of the best family-friendly beaches in the southeast United States. Most of the action is at “Times Square,” but the rest of the island is more sedate and relaxed.
Cheap Flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Cheap Flights to Ft. Lauderdale
Thanks to the 1960 movie, Where the Boys Are, this once-quiet South Florida city became synonymous with Spring Break. But starting in the 1980s, the city of Fort Lauderdale made efforts to change its image and started to put limits on the mega party scene, hoping to ensure a family-friendly experience.
Today, the city still draws plenty of college kids in March, but the energy is not quite so wild. In fact, Fort Lauderdale has moved upscale a bit and Port Everglades is now one of the largest cruise centers in the world. The t shirt shops and souvenir stores that once overwhelmed the waterfront have given way to trendy shops, nice restaurants, and a new two-mile promenade that offers unobstructed pedestrian access along one of the city’s nicest beaches.
The water is what brings most visitors to Fort Lauderdale – the area boasts more than 20 miles of powdery sand beaches and 300 miles of waterways, making it truly the “Venice of America”.
Cheap Flights to Florida
Who go: Florida is the country’s most popular winter vacation spot, well-known for its most famous host, Mickey Mouse, spring-break parties, and great beaches. But if you’re looking for more than a party and a tan, Florida is trendy and culturally diverse with attractions for every passion.
You can spend an entire vacation in Florida golfing, bird-watching, snorkeling, diving, sailing, fresh or saltwater fishing, kayaking, napping on the beach, or catching spring training. For nature lovers, Florida’s estuaries have an abundance of water fowl; some of Florida’s “every day” birds are threatened species. The state is a wildlife haven and has several nature parks and refuges, the most famous of which is the Florida Everglades, the only subtropical wilderness in North America.
For your vacation setting, there are picturesque small towns steeped in history, the glitz and glamour of large cities, family vacations, or romantic getaways. The first decision you need to make is which part of Florida you’re going to visit on this trip.
Cheap Flights to Detroit
Detroit is a prime example of American innovation, hard work, and renovation. The oldest city in the Midwest, one-time automobile capital of the world, and birthplace of Motown is making a comeback. The Motor City is again an industrial center—producing about a quarter of the nation’s autos, trucks, and tractors—and one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes.
Detroit’s professional sports teams—Red Wings, Tigers, Lions, and Pistons—compete at the highest levels. The theater district is second only to New York’s Broadway in number of seats. The city has a prestigious fine-art museum, one of the leading zoos in the country, and a blast-out celebration with its Canadian neighbor every July.
The automobile is still a central figure in Detroit with its annual car shows, classic cars on display and in parades, and tours of former automobile barons’ estates. The Motor City is home to the nation’s first stretch of paved road (Woodward Avenue), the first traffic light, and one of best freeway systems in the country.
Cheap Flights to Denver
The Mile High City sits on a plain nestled against the Rocky Mountains. Denver balances big-city life with a love of the outdoors. Here’s where you’ll find the nation’s largest city park system, 90 golf courses, 650 miles of paved bike trails, and a mile-long pedestrian promenade in downtown.
A must-see list would include the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the world’s second largest performing arts center, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, an open-air natural theater and the setting for thousands of rock and classical concerts and the Denver Art Museum, which has one of the most impressive collections of Western art in the U.S. and an excellent American Indian collection.
The trendy historic district is Lower Downtown, called LoDo. Carefully restored Victorian buildings are now homes to jazz clubs, art galleries, restaurants, and shops. LoDo, the city’s birthplace, is the trendiest part of the city and the heart of Denver’s night scene.
Cheap Flights to Dallas
The Big D, Dallas Cowboys, cattle, black gold, and Neiman Marcus: Dallas started out as a prairie trading post and is now a tribute to commerce, particularly the financial, technology, and telecommunications industries.
Dallas is proud of, and some say downright stuffy about, its sophistication and its old wealth. For all that, Texans know how to laugh at themselves and how to have fun—especially in the Deep Ellum with its superb restaurants, galleries, shops, and clubs.
But it’s not all about the money. Visitors to Dallas are greeted with Texas hospitality and plenty of activities—museums, amusement parks, gardens, and historic sites. Dallas is also a sports town and is one of the few U.S. cities that supports teams in six professional sports, the best known being the Dallas Cowboys football team (five-time Super Bowl champions).
Cheap Flights to California
A quick summary of California is difficult. Its variety and diversity—even its weather—are more extreme than most states. “Extreme” could sum up California: Northern and Southern Californians each claim to be a different, and separate, state; the north has old redwood forests and towns almost too small to put on a map; the south has glitz, glamour, and Hollywood stars too big to put on a map.
The common thread through California is diversity. Geographically, the state has redwood forests, the rich and fertile Central Valley, the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, deserts, and hundreds of miles of coastline. California continues to produce a wealth of creativity in both the arts and sciences, and is home to some of the leading universities in the world. Movie stars abound in LA, as do rollerblading hotties in Venice Beach, and engineers in Silicon Valley. The state is home to world-renowned cities, and people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds continue to migrate to and settle in California.
Cheap Flights to Boston
Why Go: Historic sites from the time of the Revolutionary War; modern skyscrapers; a leading medical, high-tech, and financial center; museums and performance arts; over 40 institutions of higher learning; and great shopping. Boston also has a long list of this country’s firsts; the first publicly supported library, public school, subway system, and the citywide First Night (New Year’s Eve) celebration to name a few. One of the oldest cities in the U.S., Boston thrives on diversity and being first as much as possible.
Everywhere you go in Boston there’s history. Colonial buildings downtown, brownstones in Back Bay and Beacon Hill, 19th-century mansions, and historic buildings adapted for reuse to house businesses and shops. To help you see the attractions there are walking tours, trolley tours, Duck tours, and skywalk views of the city.
You can’t help but be surprised at how much this compact city has to offer visitors. On the high end, Boston is nearly as expensive as New York, but you can explore the city and dine on a student’s budget.
