Hub Cities - Travel Deals

Cheap Ticket Tips: Stick to the Hubs

When figuring out a vacation destination, the top criteria on most checklists is not “this place must have a major hub airport nearby.” We pick spots based on things we want to do or see there, and in fact, we often choose places because they’re difficult to reach. What better way to unplug, after all, than to get as far away from civilzation as possible?

The only trouble with this approach is that much of the time this means taking two or more flights to get to your destination. If you’re a budget-conscious traveler, each one of those flights adds up to increasingly costly airfare. To find cheap airfare, then, you’re better off picking a vacation destination by its proximity to a hub airport.

If you think this kind of selection process would be limiting, think again. All you need to do is play around on a site like GettingFrom.com – enter your departure city to see fares from your home airport, and you’ll see right away that it’s not the same four places on repeat. The GettingFrom.com list of the best fares from your home airport is updated daily, so you can keep an eye on it to get the best deal on a flight.

Remember, too, that just because you fly into one city doesn’t mean you have to stay there. Check out what ground transportation options are from that city, either directly from the airport or from the city center, and you might find there are cheap bus or train trips to interesting and off-beat destinations nearby. It’s also worth looking into a rental car – even with the high price of gas, driving to another city or town from a hub airport city is often cheaper than trying to fly directly.

Will flying into only hub airports keep you from seeing some destinations? Absolutely – and this tip isn’t always practical to apply. It usually depends on which is of more importance to you – a cheap flight or a specific place. If you’re more open to whatever destinations are cheapest to fly to and you’re the kind of person who can find adventure anywhere, then by all means keep an eye on the deals to hub airports you can reach easily from your city.

We, here in Portland, Oregon, have hub-city envy.

It’s true! Portland isn’t much of a hub for, well, anything. Unless you count beer. And Pacific Northwest cuisine. And artists. But that’s it. No travel hub or nothing.

The reason we get so distraught? We-ll, first of all, almost anywhere we have to fly, we have to make a connection. Really. It sucks.

And secondly, we don’t get the awesome ‘we have plans to fill’ seat deals. Like this one, currently from Delta, with amazing rates out of their Atlanta hub.

One way- rates between Atlanta, GA (ATL) and:
Key West, FL (EYW) $149
Montreal, QC (YUL) $149
Ponce, PR (PSE) $139
St. Croix, VI (STX) $159
Wilmington, DE (ILG) $89

Must buy by the end of the month, for travel through September.
