New York - Travel Deals

Choosing the right airport for your trip to/from New York

When it comes to finding cheap airfare, having more options usually means there’s more possibility of getting a great deal – so the fact that New York has three airports from which to choose often means New Yorkers have access to enviably low fares.

Not all of New York’s airports are equal when it comes to deals, however, so it’s good to know a little bit about each one so you can figure out which is your best option for flying out of – or into – New York. It’s also important to keep in mind that in order to include all three NY airports in one airfare search, you can use the airport code “NYC” instead of the individual airport codes listed below. That way, you’ll get results from all three airports without doing three separate searches.

New York to London flights for the price of an expensive burger

expensive-burger.jpgPeople who in London and New York City have it pretty darned good. Not only do they get to experience two of the world’s great cities on a daily basis, but they also seem to get the best deals on airline flights. I guess we can begrudge them the savings because they have to pay 20 dollars for a hamburger or 20 pounds for a martini.

Even if you don’t live in New York or London, you can still benefit from their cheap ass flights that depart from and arrive in those cities. For example, British Airways has a deal until September 27, 2007 where flights from the Big Apple to London are a mere $179 one way. As a general rule of thumb, if you can get a ticket to London for less than $400 round trip you are getting a very good deal.

Another rule of thumb. If you are paying $20 for a hamburger or 20 pounds for a martini, your stomach better send you a thank you note.

Virgin America loses its virginity on August 9, 2007

virgin_america.jpgOver the years travelers looking for cheap flights from the United States to London have come to appreciate Virgin Atlantic. The airline operated by the billionaire mogul Richard Branson offers up moderately priced flights with a bit more comfort than most transatlantic airlines.

Virgin recently launched a new branch of their airline called Virgin America. The first flight will be on August 9, 2007. The discount airline currently has five airport destinations – New York JFK, Washington Dulles, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It might be limited in scope at the moment, but it is still worth a look if for nothing else its introductory flight ticket sale.

Virgin America is offering round trop flights from coast to coast for less than $300. Flights from LA to San Francisco start at $91 round trip. Any time you see a price like that it bodes well for travelers. It means other airlines will have to offer cheap flights too to keep up with their new competitors.

To get the discount prices on Virgin America you need to make your purchase by August 8, 2007.

Save on New York City Hotels and Hostels

big-apple-new-york.jpgIn a city that is legendary for its $25 hamburgers and $20 beers, finding a hotel room that isn’t the same price per night as your monthly mortgage can be a real challenge. Unless you have a friend to stay with or the ability to sleep comfortably under a tree in Central Park, it is likely that you will pay a premium for a place to stay when you visit New York.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. There are decent accommodations for decent prices to be found, you just need to find them. Hotels.com has an offer right now that will allow you to save 25% on New York City hotels. Considering that hotels in the city are about $25% more expensive than they are in other cities in the United States this deal basically means you can visit the Big Apple and stay for about the same price as you might elsewhere.

If those hotel prices are still too steep for you, go ahead and check out the rates on New York hostels. These run the gamut from being fleabag establishments in dodgy neighborhoods to being perfectly lovely places for you and your entire family to stay without having to take out a second mortgage.

Save 25% on New York City Hotels

29-ice-skating-at-rockefeller-center.jpgI like to think that if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere. Not sure how I cam up with that notion but maybe some day I will write a song or poem or something about it.

I don’t think you need to tell me how great of a place New York City is to visit. If you gave me 4 days and told me I could spend them in any large city in the world I would choose New York. Anything beyond four days and it simply becomes too much. Too much noise, too much traffic, too much sensory overload.

But for four days it is fabulous. There are all of the world class museums to visit, there is the very real possibility that you will spend $25 on a hamburger, there is unrivaled shopping, there is Central Park, there is the theater, there is the endless opportunities to people watch and to possibly see a celebrity, there is a visit to the David Letterman show, there are the jazz clubs, there is the reality of getting ripped off by a taxi driver, and there is much, much more.

One thing that you won’t find too often in New York is an affordable hotel room. The city is expensive and that applies to hotels as well, which is why it would behoove you to take advantage of Expedia’s sale on hotel rooms. If those rates don’t fit your budget, you can shop around and try to find an even better deal.

Houston, we have a Deal on Cheap Airplane Tickets to New York

dynamo-fans.jpgCongratulations to the rabid fans of the Houston Dynamo soccer team on your squad’s championship victory this season. What better way to celebrate than to head to the Big Apple and to wear your hideous, I mean, glorious orange shirts and to prance around proclaiming that your team is the best in the country.

Ok, chances are you aren’t a huge soccer fan and that your wardrobe isn’t full of orange, but I still think you’ll agree that landing a round-trip ticket from Houston to New York for $177 is enough to make anyone want to scream, “GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!”
