Summer’s almost here, and if you haven’t already planned your summer travels you’ve got some catching up to do. This is the time of year when people plan big trips – it’s usually when people take their longest blocks of holiday time – but summer is also a great time for lots of long weekend trips. You don’t have to let location or budget keep you from exploring a bit beyond your usual borders, and summer is an excellent time to get out in the world.

If you don’t need convincing to take a trip this summer but you’re stuck on the subject of where to go, then we’re here to help. Depending on the when you’d like to travel, we’ve got suggestions for each of the summer months below, as well as some ideas of the best spots to go in Europe and the United States during the summer months.

Best Places in the US to Go This Summer

Summer, for many, just screams “road trip” – and there are few countries better suited to a road trip than the United States. We love our cars, the interstate highway system is an intricate lace-like web connecting here with the furthest there, and there’s just so much country to see!

There are great reasons to explore the U.S. by car just about anywhere you go in the country, but – as mentioned – it’s a big place. If you need help narrowing down your choices for a U.S. road trip this summer (or just need a few suggestions for places to visit in the United States – road trip or not), here are some of our favorites for the summer of 2011.

Top Ten US Destinations for Travel Bargains

bargain-of-the-week-main-logo.gifGoing on a bargain vacation doesn’t mean you have to spend a week a fleabag hotel off of an interstate in the middle of nowhere. In fact, some of the cheapest places to travel in the United States are also the most popular and desirable. The good folks over at Hotwire have compiled a list of the top ten destinations for bargain travelers. And the winners are:

1. Denver, Colorado
2. Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina
3. Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
4. Knoxville, Tennessee
5. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Sarasota, Florida
6. Albuquerque-Santa Fe, New Mexico
7. Orlando-Daytona Beach, Florida
8. Reno, Nevada
9. Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas
10. Los Angeles, California

Not a bad list in my opinion. If you are interested in finding the best hotel rates for any of these cities, the first place you should go is to the magnificent hotel finder.

Canada is lovely in the Fall

maple lead.jpgBy now, you have probably heard that Canada invented the maple leaf. It is true. Just look at the Canadian flag.

The cool thing about leaves is that they change colors in the autumn and that even applies to trees north of the border. If you have never been to Canada in the fall, you haven’t really lived life. Beautiful country, friendly people and lots of opportunities to commune with trees. The city life ain’t so bad either. Ideally, you’ll mix in a little bit of both.

United Airlines is making pretty darn easy for you to experience Canada. For about the price of some maple syrup, you can fly from the United States to Canada for a long weekend or for some serious, hardcore leaf peeping. Go ahead and treat yourself to a trip. The leaves will be lonely if they don’t see you.

Summer Storm Season

The stormy summer months have been causing havoc for airlines around the country.

With another month of storms still on the forefront, hundreds of flights have been delayed, canceled or re-routed because of torrential rainfall in the Midwest and Northeast.

If traveling this summer, give yourself ‘emergency backup plans’, especially if you have a connecting flight, where you might find your luggage still on the ground at home and you halfway to your destination.

Get contacts of people who live in the area, or know which hotel you plan to call for a warm bed – or what corner of the airport you plan to sleep in.
