When I first visited Prague back in the early 1990s it still had a bit of that Eastern European feel to it. You could walk a few blocks away from the Charles Bridge and find a genuine communist cafeteria that served unidentifiable gruel for about 50 cents. It was kind of neat for westerners to experience life on the other side of the Iron Curtain in a city that is nothing short of beautiful.

Flash forward to today and you’ll have a hard time finding any evidence that Prague was once under the Soviet sphere. Seemingly every American who has ever dreamed of becoming a writer is there right now working on their first novel while they earn beer drinking money by being TEFL teachers. The old grungy charm has been replaced by a hip new attitude.

That isn’t to say that Prague is not worth visiting. It clearly is. The historic downtown is one of Europe’s jewels and a look at its famous castle should be high on anyone’s travel list. The prices have gone up, the crowds have poured in and the gruel is gone, but Prague is still very, very nice and when you can fly to Prague for cheap you should take advantage while you can.

Asia is a happening part of the world. From the bustling shopping districts of Tokyo to the serenity of Kyoto to the overwhelming growth of Shanghai to the rapid transformation of Beijing, there is a lot going on in Japan and China. Now is the perfect time to visit one or both of these great countries.

In China you can see the elements of the old way of life right next to the breakneck race towards modernity. Farmers with no shows still work the rice paddies while next to their fields huge high rise buildings stretch way into the sky, ushering in a new way of life. The contrast is quite stark and in some ways unsettling for both visitor and resident alike. It is also exciting. The optimism is in the air. In some ways a visit to China can be like a visit to the United States in the early 20th Century. You can see a country that is being transformed on a daily basis.

The transformation has already taken place in modern, bustling Japan, but it is no less interesting a country to visit. The sprawling metrotopolis of Tokyo goes on forever, with lights and people everywhere. Outside the city you will find pockets of traditional communities existing in a world dominated by high speed bullet trains and hand held communication devices. It is simply fascinating.

Isn’t it kind of funny that every year around the middle of March when St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated people start coming out of the woodwork claiming their Irish heritage? Ireland and its people have a good name in large parts of the United States and many a traveler has enjoyed warm visions of what it would be like to spend some time in Ireland.

Those visions might include kissing the Blarney Stone, hanging out in a small town pub hoisting a few and trying to understand people who speak English like you have never heard it before, wandering the streets of Dublin, playing golf on one of the wind strewn links courses and picking clover leafs while leprechauns dance around you.

You will literally have the castles to yourself and the tourist sites will have everything but tourists. The weather might be a bit gloomy, but that is the real Ireland and since you claim Irish heritage for St. Patrick’s Day you won’t complain about a few rain drops.

A modern city, steeped in history, situated in a beautiful setting and replete with an awesome nightlife, Barcelona, Spain is a must-see for travelers of all ages and all interests. Modern Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city and arguably its best. The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona’s founding dates back two thousand years. Situated on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean sea, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city that has benefited from contact with global traders throughout the centuries.

Today, Barcelona is both a Catalonian city and a global player. More than 13% of its population comes from other countries, a number that is growing every year. Barcelona is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, due to its good climate and its cultural offerings. Barcelona houses over 45 renowned museums and is famous for its unique contemporary architecture and the famous works of architect Antoni Gaudí. Ticket prices generally start edging up in the spring and then they explode into the expensive atmosphere come summer.

If you need further incentive to fly to London, British Airways is offering an excellent deal. They will throw in two free hotel nights in select European cities like Athens, Amsterdam, Prague, Madrid or Rome. Even if you are just passing through London for business or are getting a connecting flight there you can still pick up a couple of free nights in a hotel. Considering the already low prices on flights to London this is one deal that could end up saving you quite a bit of money.

To take advantage of British Airlines’ kindness, travel must occur between January 23, 2007 and March 25, 2007 and you must book your ticket by January 24, 2007. Even if you miss the deadline, you should still be able to pick up a cheap ticket to London for a couple more weeks and you can also find great rates on youth hostels in the city.

In this mixed up, mumbled up, globalized world of ours, it only makes sense that an airline from India has the best deal on flights from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany. Air India is starting to become a player on the global air carrier scene and that is good news for bargain travelers. The airline currently is dishing out flights from the American heartland to the middle of Europe for less than what it costs to fly coast-to-coast in the United States.

Cheap flights to Frankfurt are an absolute score. Not only can you fly there and travel throughout Europe, but because it is such an international hub you can fly there and then fly to just about anywhere else in the world. Forget the United Nations, the Frankfurt International Airport is where nations come together. Walk down the terminals and you will hear just about every language spoken in the world. You will also see flights to places you don’t even know exist. If you want to learn geography, spend a few hours layover in Frankfurt.

The Chicago to Frankfurt deal is good for a limited time. You need to book through Priceline before January 25, 2007 and depart before March 31, 2007.

There is a reason that Copenhagen is consistently named as one of the best cities to live in: it rocks. The city is super clean, super safe, super friendly and, well, just all around super. All of the charms that are so appealing to those who live there are also fully on display to travelers paying a visit to Denmark’s capital.

Situated on the eastern shore of the island of Zealand and partly on the island of Amage, Copenhagen was founded as a city for merchant ships. With the early trading, it quickly established itself as a cosmopolitan place that drew upon a wide variety of cultures. That legacy still exists today as you walk down some of its narrow side streets and along the beautiful harbor front. With the construction of the Øresund Bridge, which connects Copenhagen with Malmo, Sweden, the city is now a gateway to Scandinavia.

Flights to Copenhagen are often more expensive than they are to Stockholm or Oslo, but at the moment you can fly there for considerably less than many parts of Europe. Priceline has a deal where you can fly from New York to Copenhagen for less than $450 if you travel before March 21, 2007.
