Who Go: Saying Alaska to someone brings two words to mind: huge and cold. It is huge. This is a land of wilderness, glaciers, tundras, active volcanoes, rainforests, and nineteen of the country’s highest mountains, including Mt. McKinley (Denali). Wildlife is abundant: Kodiak and grizzly bears, caribou, eagles, salmon, whales, moose, and migratory birds. There’s a diversity of people and cultures, mixing the native peoples’ history and tradition with that of newcomers who arrive from all parts of the world. And it does get cold. The long winters create a playland for outdoor enthusiasts who ski, snowshoe, dogsled, skate, or just want to cheer on the Iditarod racers. The cold winters are also dark, which makes the northern lights even more awe-inspiring. The flip side is the warm, beautiful summers with sunlight all day for months.
Alaska lives up to its nickname: the Last Frontier. There are towns accessible only by dogsled or air, grand expanses of untouched wilderness, whales breaching in fjords, prospectors panning for gold—a lifetime of adventure.
