Why Go: Minneapolis, Minnesota, called “City of Lakes” is also known as one half of the “Twin Cities,” sharing it’s twinhood with St. Paul, located less than 12 miles away.
Resting at the head of the Mississippi river, near the only waterfall on the river, Saint Anthony Falls, the name, Minneapolis, comes from the Native American Dakota word “minne” which means water.
Another important name from Minneapolis history is that of the first European to explore the area, Father Louis Hennepin, whose name adorns Hennepin Avenue. Part of the avenue houses the Hennepin Theatre District which bolsters Minneapolis’s claim to the highest per capita attendance at theater and arts events outside of New York City, with the most famous theater in the city, the Guthrie Theater, attracting major productions and big-name stars.
Likewise devoted to sports, shopping, and the great outdoors, Minnesotans can lay claim to one of the largest neon sculptures in the U.S. at it’s world-class sports arena, the Target Center, the largest indoor mall in country, the Mall of America, and some of the best water sports and winter skiing venues to be found in the Midwest and beyond.
